August 7, 2024. Brockville to Kingston, Ontario
When we left our warm showers hosts this morning, they took our picture as they do with the other guests they have had. We saw some of the photos in the bedroom where we had slept, which also had a world map with many pins in it for all the people who had stayed with them, (we added one for us).
Today we started seeing all sorts of houses perched on small islands in the river, which we saw for many miles. You could tell we were definitely in the “Thousand Islands” area!
As we often do, we stopped at a market stand next to the road. This one also had several different types of melons and we bought a small one to eat later. They also had local cheese and we bought some of that, too, along with some vegetables.
As we approached Kingston, we went by a large military base east of the city. Then we had to cross a large body of water. The route we were taking led naturally to the southernmost bridge, but that bridge was under construction. As the detour started close to the bridge, we decided to keep going and check it out, as we have found that often bicycles can still cross and it can provide a quiet route for a while. However that was not the case this time. After we turned around, we saw a couple pushing a stroller down the sidewalk. We soon were traveling on the same sidewalk in the other direction, and after a few hundred feet, saw an elephant blankie on the sidewalk. It looked very fresh and clean so we figured it had come from the people walking with the stroller, so Jim turned around to bring it to them. Their 6-month-old had dropped it out the side of the stroller without them noticing. They were very happy to get it back!
