April of 2024 New Adventure


Something that we have never done is try Amtrak's "roll your bike on the train" option.  With a reservation, you can get on the train with your bicycle, get to your destination and roll it off again and away you go.  We could not do this with our recumbent bicycles as it only applies to standard bikes.  So we have been riding our road bikes to give this a try. If this goes well, then this opens up a lot of options to travel to different parts of the country and take a ride.
Our plan is to take the train to St Louis, visit our daughter and son-in-law there, then leave from their house and travel to Fort Madison, Iowa, using Adventure Cycling's Great Rivers route maps for the most part.  In Fort Madison, we will catch the train and return home.

  As predicted, we didn't get any rain last night and because of a little bit longer day, we got started a little sooner.                    Packing Up at Fort Custer  We had beautiful roads lined with hickory, maple, oak and walnut trees especially during the first part of our ride, which sometimes led to a challenge dodging all the nuts and acorns on the side of the road.  We had a bit more traffic today than many other days even though we tried to choose quieter roads.  We also had a moderate head wind so that slowed us down a bit.   Wouldn't you know it--we had a flat tire less than 10 miles from home!  We still arrived well before sunset.

Dreams and preparation

Traverse City July 2021.  Ride around northern half of  Lake Michigan. We  have dreamed about crossing the  country on bikes for many years.   Work, parenting and other things has prevented us from this  adventure.  This  year we are  working toward making it a  reality.  We have  gotten work figured out that we can be away for  a  number of months.   We now have our tickets purchased for the train ride to Seattle, some new gadgets purchased and multiple hours spent looking at routes.

We had a great breakfast with Gary and Debbie and left about 8:30 in the morning.  Today was a day of beautiful flowers, a port with huge number of shipping containers  and downtown Seattle.  We even got to see part of Mt. Rainier when clouds lifted.   We discovered Seattle and surrounding communities have some impressive hills.Jim showed his lack of coordination and fell over on his bike when front wheel got just over edge of sidewalk. Dignity decreased, slight scrape to knee and word used that Grandpa shouldn't use. We are staying with Kit and Jan Flowers, friends from Christian Veterinary Mission, great food and fun conversation. Discovered that just putting in an address correctly and assuming it's a certain city can end  you up in the wrong town and add about 15 miles to your day.  So we discovered legs are in better shape than we thought because we ended up doing 76 miles today.
