Monday July 25, trolls and flights
Last night we stayed in Mt. Horeb, the town with a "trollway." One of the troll statues was right outside the door of our hotel with the bikes parked nearby. The grandsons had a lot of fun putting a bike helmet on the troll's head and climbing all over it. To rejoin the trail, we had to go down a steep downhill into the Sugar River valley. (a challenge for the driver biking back to the hotel!) Rejoining the trail, we heard chainsaws ahead--the park service was out clearing the trail. We still had a few obstacles to portage over and around, but then good after that.
Today was a similar configuration except that we replaced the Cannondale trailer with a tag-along and carried the water in the second seat of the WeeHoo.
We had lunch at the trailside park in Verona. Then onwards following a variety of trails, including probably the only bike roundabout in the country where several trails converge, then near the south shore of Lake Monona. We found a ice cream shop that served "flights:" 4 scoops of ice cream in hollows along a wooden tray. Kay went inside and got a list of the flavors. Then we paired up, 2 people from the same family per flight, and each got to pick 2 flavors. Then a couple people went back in with the order written down and got 6 flights of ice cream, plus his own dish for the smallest grandson as we had an odd number of people. After that, it was a short trip to our hotel for the night on the east side of Madison (and time in the pool for many of us!)
Did our hearts good to see all those grandkids with Jim. Ice cream didn't look too bad either!
