July 26 robber haven & illness

Tuesday, the 3rd day of our family bike trip. 
We had a pleasant breakfast and things seemed to be going pretty well, but then as we got all packed up to go, we had a shivering grandson.  We waited a bit with no improvement, so he and a parent headed to our next hotel in Jefferson to spend the day sleeping.  The rest of us got to go to a fun playground about a quarter of the way on our journey, with many different structures for the kids to play on.  
Then after the next quarter of our trip, we stopped in a small town and had lunch, including milkshakes, at some picnic tables trailside. After pedaling, 6 grandsons still had energy to run around at each stop.  We rode past an area which prior to being drained and becoming muck farms was a huge marsh. In 1832 the Finch Gang would commit robberies in the neigboring area and then would escape into the marsh where they had a hideout on a small raised area in the center. The law enforcement wouldn't dare enter the marsh so the Finches were truly out of the reach of the law. We got to Jefferson, then Kay & Jim drove back to pick up the 2nd van.  The grandsons except for the ill one went swimming and then we had supper at A & W. We had good tasting coney dogs and of course their classic root beer float--very tasty.

       After spending a few days with our son and family and getting to watch our oldest grandson run in a cross-country meet, we headed home. A few days later, Kay located the information about her stolen bike, found the serial number and called the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Police Service to give them the number, as we didn't have it with us on the trip. When an officer called back, he put the number in their database and said there wasn't a match. Since we hadn't heard anything from them while on the trip, she asked what they had found when they had reviewed the security camera video, and other details of the case. He said the officer who was handling the case was out of the office and would call back on Monday. When Jim got home from work on Monday, we discovered they had called his phone instead of Kay's, The next morning while we were both at work, they tried calling again, so Kay called them back at lunch time. We had a great breakfast with Gary and Debbie and left about 8:30 in the morning.  Today was a day of beautiful flowers, a port with huge number of shipping containers  and downtown Seattle.  We even got to see part of Mt. Rainier when clouds lifted.   We discovered Seattle and surrounding communities have some impressive hills.Jim showed his lack of coordination and fell over on his bike when front wheel got just over edge of sidewalk. Dignity decreased, slight scrape to knee and word used that Grandpa shouldn't use. We are staying with Kit and Jan Flowers, friends from Christian Veterinary Mission, great food and fun conversation. Discovered that just putting in an address correctly and assuming it's a certain city can end  you up in the wrong town and add about 15 miles to your day.  So we discovered legs are in better shape than we thought because we ended up doing 76 miles today. August 20, 2024. Monroe, Michigan to Napoleon, Ohio.

  .    We slept well in spite of the extremely soft mattress, but around 5:30 just after Jim got up to use the restroom, he heard a rustling sound that seemed to be in our room.  He immediately was worried about a mouse getting into our food, but never did figure it out.      We got a very reasonable start and had a mild tailwind as we headed south towards Toledo.  We had pleasant riding on low-traffic back roads for the most part before the Ohio border, but never very far from I-75 so often could see it and more often hear it.  We also crossed a set of 3 railroad tracks numerous times as we wended our way south, but didn’t see a train.  We passed a local bicyclist, who mentioned that it was a good area for seeing egrets and sure enough, there were 2 great white egrets in the marshes right there!  We saw several others along with some great blue herons during the day.     In Toledo, we joined US Bicycle Hwys 25 and 30. ...
