August 31, Loop into Pennsylvania and Blank Odometer

We have been looking at the last portion of our trip, and are thinking of traveling on Skyline Drive.  However, we didn't want to travel on it on the busy holiday weekend.  So we have  a couple extra days to spend before we go to Skyline. So we are staying an additional night at the Bike Bunkhouse. Tonight we have the place to ourselves (so far); the  rain drove in 5 other bicyclists yesterday who were all muddy and wet, and were eager for showers and a dry place to sleep. We asked at the bike shop if they had any suggested loops that weren't on the 2 trails and they did not, so we used our cycling apps and came up with a route that gave us about 2600 feet of climb which is good prep for Skyline.  We headed up a pleasant, rolling valley between 2 ridges, then we crossed over the ridge on our right and then a second one, then headed back toward Hancock.  We had perfect weather, beautiful views of ridges, woods and fields, saw a couple of tiny towns and had fairly quiet roads.

At one point we were on a side road that looped back into the main road we were taking, and what did we find? A downed tree to portage. We got a lot of practice doing that back in Wisconsin!
Once when we stopped for a snack, vines that heavily coated several trees along the road were blooming with clusters of tiny flowers, and they loaded with bees.  When we were getting closer to Hancock,  we could even see from a number of miles away where I-70 crosses the big ridge on its way to Breezewood.
On a large downhill Kay glanced at her odometer to see how fast we were going and discovered it wasn't working.  She didn't dare to do anything then. We tried a couple of things later, including replacing the battery (we had last done it just before the trip) and it did not seem to work so the  data person lost some data.

  1. Sounds like that was a most beautiful trek! Sorry about the odometer though.
