Monday June 20, Forsyth to Miles City Montana

After breakfast, we walked over to the Animal House Veterinary Hospital, which was very close to our hotel, to see Dr. Rick Smith, who was then one of the vets at the Miles City practice where Jim did his externship. We got to chat with him between him helping a few clients then had lunch with him before leaving. From him and from a man packing up to go home, we heard about the Quigley Shoot which happened this past weekend in Forsyth. 500  people came to it from five different countries. They use black powder and make their own bullets and shoot at targets 350 to 850 yards away. Yesterday as we came into town, we crossed the Yellowstone River; we noticed it was high as we hurriedly crossed in the rain. There’s been some minor flooding but nothing like what happened farther upstream.  Today we followed the valley downstream and had occasional views of the river from far away. We took the old road about  half the way there and then expressway the rest of the way as that's legal in Montana and it was the only paved choice. We had some experience on an interstate-type road in Missouri in September 2020, so we knew what to expect. It started to rain when we were about halfway to Miles City so we got fairly wet once again. Saw some very impressive cropland on the tablelands of the valley, including a small field (for around here) of 40 to 80  acres of soybeans which may have been the first time we saw them. We also saw a field of corn for the first time yesterday near town. we came into Miles City, took a picture of the Miles City Veterinary clinic where Jim spent about 6 weeks 44 years ago .
