June 21 Tuesday Miles City to Glendive, MT

Today after a breakfast with food that we got at Walmart last night, we got an early start as had a bit longer distance to Glendive. It was cool and cloudy so, although we started off wearing shorts, we had a lot more clothes on top plus gloves. Today was another day of following the Yellowstone River Valley. We headed out on the old road leading out of Miles City which was very smooth and straight and low traffic and even had a mild tailwind. The first sunlight we saw was lighting up some of the hills on the other side of the valley, while we were under a cloud cover. Farms along the road did a lot of irrigation. Saw a number of historical plaques talking about trains, past military campaigns, and management of the range for effective use of it. Stopped in a small town called Terry, named after General Terry. While Jim stopped at the post office, Kay went past it to check out the church building beyond and it was a Presbyterian Church.  She met the pastor who  amazingly had graduated from Western Seminary in our town! We were looking for a place to donate the warmer clothes we got at the flea market sale in Washington state. People told us s about a donation bin, but it was hard to find, it was a small little shed with a little cupboard you opened up to put stuff in. The pastor had told us about places to eat, so we had some lunch at the American legion and chatted with someone who  actually worked there some of the time but just was there for lunch today.  She originally come from Georgia and lived in Terry for 14 years. We went to a store next to American legion which had a whole bunch of interesting knick knacks relating to Montana but we just got some Montana chocolate bars because that would not add to our bike weight for long. Had beautiful views of the Yellowstone River as well as the hills and ridges and fields that surrounded it.
Crossing the Yellowstone.

Incorrect maps led us to make a portage unto the expressway sooner than we had expected to ride along it, unsure if proper getting on like this when no ramp present.  Our route which was roughly parallel to expressway turned to unfriendly gravel and looked like it was turning in a different direction..
At the Montana store.
Amazingly did not rain today. It wasn't supposed to but from our experience, we were afraid it was going to.
